For Your Eyes only (Teachers):
-
This GLP “forces” your students to communicate about math.
-
This GLP requires your students to answer the age-old question of “Why does this matter?” for themselves. When they ask, you can refer them to their own answers.
-
This GLP enables your students to see universal applications of math. They will compare how other cultures use math the same as they do. But they will also contrast how it might look different in other cultures. The content will be the same, but the context will change from one project to the next.
-
This GLP empowers your students to meet several standards at once, without even realizing it. This will also make your administrators very happy.
Your students need to have:
-
Internet access
-
a computer that can handle uploading and storing photos and videos
-
digital cameras (or scanners) and/or video cameras (smart phones are fine)
-
editing software (tutorials are provided)
-
presentation tools such such as prezi, google drive, glogster, imovie, etc. (tutorials are provided)
Helpful Hints:
-
Please review proper netiquette with your students before they make comments on the projects of others.
-
Find a few students who are into photography and videography as well as movie editing. Make these students your class leaders and allow them to help you and others.
Get Started:
-
Begin by assigning homework where take the photos or videos over several months or units. I like to make an assignment of 2 photos per chapter, due the day of the test.
-
Then you can form the groups to select the photos to be used in the product and edit them together.
-
Ex: Geometry students could take photos of congruent items, right angles, parallel lines, etc. Algebra students could take photos of fractions (their dinner plate is 1/3 empty), substitution (replace one shirt with another), like terms (coins), etc.
-
Be creative and have fun. Students come up with amazing finds you never would have thought of.
